For 40 years Canada has been conducting business with Castro. Once the Castro government began “procuring” the property of the citizens of Cuba, Canada became a fencing operation for the stolen goods. According to Barbara Amiel of Canada’s Maclean’s magazine, while in the early 1960 the US was hesitant to freeze the Cuban assets in retaliation for stealing the property of US citizens, “Castro transferred Cuban deposits held in US banks into Canadian banks, which had no qualms about Fidel’s acquisition methods." Castro did not confiscate Canadian Banks.

A former employee of the Canadian international freight-forwarding company Kuehne & Nagel, reports that in the 1960’s he saw the paperwork for containers loaded with Cuban family heirlooms stolen by Castro, shipped to Canada and auctioned-off there. As he recalls, Cubans were coming to Canada from Miami searching for family treasures that had been stolen by Castro. Canada was in complicity with this operation and still is collaborating to keep Castro in power.

The same collaboration with Castro can be traced since 1959 to Mexico and Spain. Now, the Spanish royals are demonstrating their insensitivity by announcing a visit to Cuba’s tyrant in early 1999. Spain and Mexico have never stopped taking advantage of the situation in order to make money and to annoy the US, just like our “friendly neighbor” Canada. Canadians, Mexicans, Spaniards and other Europeans are vacationing in Castroland and having the audacity to buy vacation places there while Cubans are risking their lives – 60,000 deaths so far - trying to escape from that “foreigners-only paradise.”

During these 40 years of tyranny, the US embargo left Castro free to trade with the rest of the world. Has this trade with Castro made him change his political posture, improve human rights or the living conditions for the Cuban people? Obviously not. Has world engagement brought a change in Castro’s intentions about the future of Cuba? Obviously not, as he continues with his tired old “Socialism or death!” So, where is the logic in the argument that lifting the US embargo will encourage him to mend his ways?

The fallacious engagement theory that the unscrupulous international business community has been using to justify their despicable actions is that it will bring change and improve the living conditions in Cuba. Cubans are painfully aware who engagement has been helping and keeping in control for decades. All these foreign ventures with Castro regime companies are administered by the armed forces and the secret police – in charge of keeping him in power and repressing the people.

The Cubans who work in these international businesses are aware that these foreign companies pay salaries in US dollars to Castro and he in turn pays them in worthless Cuban pesos. They are aware that as workers in these foreign companies, they have no bargaining rights. They are aware of the differences between the opportunities of foreigners and those of natives - who aren’t part of the ruling elite – thus despising the resulting apartheid. All of the above are contributing to create hatred against the foreign exploiters, because they are not only taken advantage of by Castro but by the international business community.

Raúl Rivero, the brave journalist from Cuba Press - an independent news agency not under Castro’s control reporting today’s reality in Cuba - has recently denounced to the World Association of Newspapers in France that the Italian owned telephone company in Cuba, ETECS. He charges that the Italian company is in complicity with the Castro regime by allowing them to cut off the telephone service of the independent news agencies so they cannot report the news abroad. Also, the dissidents telephone lines are monitored and cut off regularly by the regime. The Italian embassy in Havana refuses to return calls from the independent journalists in that regard. Harassment of the opposition by Castro is nothing new, what is scandalous is that the Italians are collaborating with it. Apparently making money for the Italians is much more important than the welfare of the expendable little Cubans.

Many US “businessmen” are trying to join the herd of profiteers by pressuring the Clinton administration with the creation of a bipartisan commission to review US Cuba policy. This is another trick of the well-financed anti-US embargo lobby in the US by convincing and using people like senator John Warner from Virginia and others to corner a weak administration into lifting the embargo against Cuba.

After 40 years of the most brutal tyranny in Cuba’s history as well as in the Americas, it seems that the drive should be for the lifting of the moral embargo afflicting the international business community. It should be a matter of applying a policy of moral principles and scruples against a criminal and illegitimate regime that has raped the Cuban people of their right to live with freedom and dignity.

Why doesn’t the international business community lift their moral embargo and act as they did in the case of South Africa and Haiti and remove their investments in Castro’s Cuba? Demanding a unilateral change of policy from the US without demanding that Castro and communism must go from Cuba is hypocritical and a crime against the suffering Cuban people. Lifting the US embargo is not the answer; disinvestment is the moral thing to do.

By blaming the US and exploiting a temporary situation in Cuba because of greed, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, France, England, Germany, etc., become collaborators and partners in Castro’s crimes. Cubans are crying for an end to their misery and are not going to forget and forgive those who collaborated with their oppressor. Enough is enough and the people who love freedom and democracy in the US should want the same for Cuba. They should urge all those countries to lift the pernicious moral embargo afflicting them by helping to get rid of the last tyranny in the Americas. Only that way they all will be welcomed in a free Cuba.

Por 40 años Canadá ha estado haciendo negocios con Castro. Desde que el gobierno castrista comenzó a “obtener” las propiedades de los ciudadanos cubanos, Canadá se convirtió en cómplice de la banda de ladrones. Según Bárbara Amiél de la revista canadiense Maclean’s, mientras en los principios del 1960 los EE.UU. vacilaba en congelar las cuentas bancarias del gobierno castrista en retribución al robo de las propiedades de los ciudadanos de EE.UU., “Castro transfería los depósitos de los bancos de EE.UU. a los canadienses, que no tenían ningún escrúpulo sobre los métodos adquisitivos de Fidel.” Los bancos canadienses no fueron confiscados por Castro.

Un ex-empleado de la compañía internacional de envios de carga canadiense Kuehne & Nagel, reporta que en los 60s vió los papeles describiendo el contenido de cajas cargadas de propiedades de familias cubanas robadas por Castro y enviadas al Canadá para ser subastadas. El recuerda que muchos cubanos venian desde Miami en busca de sus propiedades robadas por Castro. Canadá fue cómplice de esa operación y aún colabora a mantener a Castro en el poder.

La misma colaboración con Castro puede ser encontrada desde 1959 en México y España. Ahora, los reyes españoles están demostrando su insensibilidad con el anuncio de su visita al tirano cubano en 1999. España y México nunca han vacilado en tomar ventaja de la situación para hacer dinero y molestar a los EE.UU., al igual que nuestro “buen vecino” Canadá. Canadienses, mejicanos, españoles y otros europeos vacacionando en Castrolandia, tienen la osadía de comprar lugares de veraneo mientras
los cubanos arriesgan sus vidas – 60,000 muertos hasta la fecha – tratando de escapar de ese “paraíso sólo para extranjeros.”

Durante éstos 40 años de tiranía, el embargo de EE.UU. ha dejado a Castro libre de comerciar con el resto del mundo. ¿Ha propiciado éste comercio con Castro un cambio en su postura política, o mejorado el nivel de vida de los cubanos? Obviamente no. ¿Ha fomentado este acercamiento económico un cambio en las intensiones de Castro sobre el futuro de Cuba? Obviamente no, él continua con su viejo y estridente “¡Socialismo o Muerte!” Entonces, ¿dónde está la lógica en el argumento que el levantamiento del embargo de EE.UU. alentará a Castro a un cambio?

La falacía de la teoría del acercamiento económico que la inescrupulosa comunidad internacional de negociantes ha venido usando para justificar sus despreciables acciones, es que traerá un cambio y mejorará las condiciones de vida en Cuba. Los cubanos están dolorosamente conscientes a quien éste acercamiento económico ha venido ayudando y manteniendo en control por décadas. Todas éstas venturas extranjeras con las compañías del régimen de Castro son administradas por las fuerzas armadas y la policía secreta – encargadas de mantenerlo en el poder reprimiendo al pueblo.

Los cubanos que trabajan en éstos negocios internacionales están conscientes que éstas compañías extranjeras pagan salarios en dólares estadounidenses a Castro y que éste en cambio les paga en devaluados pesos cubanos. Ellos saben que como trabajadores en esas compañías extranjeras, no tienen derechos laborales. Saben de las diferencias en las oportunidades entre los extranjeros y los nativos – que no forman parte de la élite gobernante – por lo tanto aborrecen el aparteismo resultante. Todo lo expuesto está contribuyendo a fomentar el odio contra los explotadores extranjeros, porque no solamente estan siendo explotados por Castro, sino por la comunidad internacional.

Raúl Rivero, el valiente periodista de Cuba Press – una agencia noticiosa independiente fuera del control castrista y que reporta la realidad en Cuba – ha denunciado recientemente ante la Asociación Mundial de Periódicos en Francia a la compañía italiana ETECS, dueña de la telefónica de Cuba. El expone que la compañía italiana actúa en complicidad con el régimen castrista permitiendoles cortar el servicio telefónico a las agencias noticiosas independientes para que no puedan reportar noticias al extranjero. También las llamadas telefónicas de los disidentes son escuchadas y cortadas regularmente por el régimen. La embajada italiana en La Habana se niega a devolver las llamadas de los periodistas independientes al respecto. El acoso a la oposicion por Castro no es nada nuevo, lo que si es escandaloso es que los italianos estén colaborando en ello. Aparentemente, hacer dinero es mucho más importante para los italianos que el bienestar de los insignificantes cubanitos.

Muchos “hombres de negocios” de EE.UU. estan tratando de unirse a la manada de explotadores presionando a la administración de Clinton con la creación de una comisión bipartidista para revisar la política hacia Cuba de EE.UU. Este es otro truco del bien financiado cabildeo anti-embargo en los EE.UU. que esta tratando de embaucar y usar a personas como el senador virginiano John Warner y otros para presionar a una débil administración a que levanten el embargo contra Cuba.

Después de 40 años de la mas brutal tiranía en la historia de Cuba y de las Américas, el esfuerzo debía estar canalizado hacia el levantamiento del embargo moral que aflige a la comunidad internacional de negociantes. El esfuerzo debia ser por la aplicacion de una política de principios morales y escrúpulos hacia un régimen criminal e ilegal que ha robado a los cubanos su derecho a vivir con libertad y dignidad.

¿Por qué la comunidad internacional no levanta su embargo moral y actúa como lo hizo con Africa del Sur y Haití, y retira sus inversiones en la Cuba de Castro? Demandar un cambio unilateral en la politica de EE.UU. sin demandar que Castro y el comunismo abandonen Cuba es una hipocrecía y un crímen contra el sufrido pueblo cubano. Levantar el embargo de EE.UU. no es la respuesta; desinvertir es lo que moralmente deben hacer.

Al culpar a EE.UU. y explotar una situación temporal en Cuba arrastrados por la codicia, Canadá México, España, Italia, Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania, etc., se han convertido en colaboradores y secuazes en los crímenes de Castro. Los cubanos están clamando por el fin de su martirio y no olvidarán a aquellos que colaboraron con sus verdugos. Basta ya, y las personas que aman la libertad y la democracia en los EE.UU. deberian querer lo mismo para Cuba. Ellos deberian demandar que todos esos paises levanten el pernicioso embargo moral que los aflige ayudando a derrocar la última tiranía en las Américas. Sólo así todos ellos serán bienvenidos en una Cuba libre.
